I had the chance for a quick visit to XS Project yesterday, a wonderful yayasan (foundation) that makes products out of waste materials - grassroots recycling and employment combined. I hope to return one day soon for a proper tour, but here are a few photos and little bit of what they do.
Handy info-graphic. As a note, there is no formal recycling program in Jakarta. Trash is collected by trash pickers and sorted for useful or saleable materials.
Advertising banners are collected, cleaned and dried to make durable tote bags, iPad covers, wallets and luggage tags.
The colourful bags are available in the XS Project shop, and at most Jakarta bazaars.
My friend and I arrived at lunch hour, but some work was in progress. These are the packaging from dish soap refill packs. If you live in Jakarta, save all such packaging - XS Project welcomes donations!
A very green golf bag...I think this one was either a special order or a prototype, not in regular production.
