After 3 weeks in Jakarta, I'm feeling a little more confident about venturing forth...we'd been told that taking walks was not safe in Jakarta because of the chaotic traffic. While that's certainly true on the busy main streets, happily our little neighbourhood of Kemang Dalam in South Jakarta is much safer and rather nice actually. We're in a little warren of narrowish streets, all with numbered iterations of Kemang Dalam...Kemang Dalam I, II, III, etc. A short 10 minutes gets me to a small plaza with a fabulous coffee shop, a decent grocery store, a Mexican restaurant, and a cute little book store.
Violent crime is rare here, but home break-ins do occur when homes are left empty. We have a free-standing house, not one in a compound. Our house staff act as security for our little walled property, but since there is no general security guard, we cannot leave the house empty. As today's Sunday, it's just me, Jim and Steph at the house for the day so we can't all go out at the same time...a little hard to get used to but not terrible. It did give Jim a great excuse not to take a walk with me!
